So, today I’m gonna tell you guys about my little adventure with this OMEGA Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch, the Sapphire version, Cal.3861, original order. It’s a mouthful, I know, but bear with me.
First off, I started digging around for info on this watch. I mean, it’s not every day you get your hands on a piece like this, right? This thing is iconic, it’s the “Moonwatch”, the one everyone pictures when they think of a classic Speedmaster. From what I gathered, it’s got this manual-wind movement, which is pretty old school, and a black dial that just screams classic cool.
Then I dove into the specifics. This Cal.3861 movement, it’s like the heart of the watch. I found out it’s Omega’s latest hand-wind chronograph movement, whatever that means. Apparently, it first showed up in some fancy 50th Anniversary Speedmaster, all decked out in yellow gold. Fancy, huh? But this one, it’s supposed to be super accurate, like within 0/+5 seconds a day. And it can handle magnetic fields and shocks better than the older models. Less maintenance too, which is always a plus.
Now, getting my hands on it was another story. I heard rumors, whispers really, that Omega was finally gonna release a standard Moonwatch with a co-axial escapement. No idea what that is, but it sounded important. And then, bam! New year, first Speedy Tuesday of 2021, and Omega drops the news. It was like the heavens opened up or something, haha.
I finally got it, and let me tell you, it’s a beauty. The Speedmaster is Omega’s most famous watch, no doubt. Everyone knows it’s the “first watch worn on the moon” and all that jazz. This new one, it’s got some updates, but it still feels like the classic. I did notice the lug to lug is pretty similar to the older 1861, but that new bracelet is comfortable. Very comfortable.
Here’s the thing, though. My watch seems to be running a bit fast, like +3-4 seconds a day. Not a huge deal, but my other watches are more accurate. And the power reserve? It’s supposed to be 50 hours, but it feels a bit short. I’m not the only one who’s noticed, it seems.
But overall, I’m stoked. It’s a solid piece, feels great on the wrist, and it’s got that whole “Moonwatch” history. Even with the minor hiccups, it’s a keeper. Just had to share my little journey with you all. Hope you enjoyed the ride!
