So, I’ve been eyeing the Patek Philippe Nautilus 5711 for a while now. It’s a beautiful watch, but man, is it hard to get your hands on one. I mean, they’re so popular that Patek Philippe only makes enough to meet like 10% of the demand. Crazy, right?
I started by doing some research. Turns out, these watches are a pretty good investment. They hold their value really well, and some even go up in price over time. And it’s not just the Nautilus – other Patek Philippe models, like the Grand Complications, also appreciate. Rolex is another good one, especially the Submariner and Daytona. Apparently, they’re known for being tough and everyone knows the brand, so they sell well too.
Getting down to business
I knew getting a 5711 wouldn’t be easy. I heard they were discontinuing the regular steel version, the 5711/1A. This only made me want it more. They made some in gold too – yellow gold (5711J-001), rose gold (5711R-001), and white gold. But I was set on steel.
Then I saw this auction for a special edition 5711, the 5711/1500A. It was made for charity – Children Action. It had this cool Maori engraving on it and a charcoal grey dial. Unique, for sure. I thought, “Maybe this is my chance!”
The auction
I registered for the auction, got my paddle number, and waited. The bidding was intense! It went higher and higher. I kept bidding, hoping I’d get lucky. This watch was selling for a good cause, after all. But it got really crazy, and eventually, it went way beyond what I could afford. It ended up selling for 6.7 million Swiss Francs, which is about 7.56 million US dollars! A new record!
Back to square one
So, I didn’t get the special edition 5711. But it was a fun experience, even though it was a bit heartbreaking to see it go for so much. I am still hopeful! These kinds of events always pump me up. I just keep my eyes on every opportunity I could get.
It got me thinking, though. Now that the regular 5711 is discontinued, how high will the prices go? I bet the people who already have them won’t sell, so there will be even fewer available. It’s going to be even tougher to get one now.
The dream continues
Anyway, I’m not giving up. I’m going to keep saving and keep looking. Maybe I’ll find a regular 5711/1A somewhere, someday. Or maybe I’ll find another cool watch that catches my eye. Who knows? It’s all part of the fun of collecting, I guess.
