Well, let me tell ya ’bout this watch, the Patek thingy, yeah, the Patek Philippe PP Calatrava 5226G-001. Folks say it’s somethin’ special, but I just see a watch, you know? A fancy one, sure, but still just a watch.
They say it’s round, this watch, and made of white gold. Sounds heavy, don’t it? And big too, 40 somethin’ millimeters they call it. Bigger than them old watches, that’s for sure. But not too thick, they say, just a little bit, like 8.53 of somethin’. Makes it sound like a pancake, all thin and flat.
Now, there’s this other watch, the Nautilus, folks are goin’ crazy for it. Can’t even get your hands on one, they say. Ten years, maybe, to get one! Imagine waitin’ ten years for a watch! I need a watch now, not in ten years. This Nautilus, it’s sporty, they say. Comes in all sorts of colors, like steel, rose gold, white gold, even two colors mixed up. Sounds like a fancy car, not a watch.
But back to this Patek, the 5226G-001. Try walkin’ into a store and buyin’ it, I dare ya. Just try. Ain’t gonna happen, see? They got none, these stores. They say the new collectors, they can’t even get one. That’s a problem, ain’t it? If you got the money, you should be able to buy the thing, simple as that.
- This Patek, it’s big for a Calatrava, they say. 40 millimeters, same as another one, the 5212A. Big for them, but not so big for other watches these days. Everyone wants big watches now, like they got somethin’ to prove.
- And if you want a cheap Patek, they say get a woman’s watch, an old one. Start at 3,300 of them dollars, whatever that is. But a man’s watch, like this 5226G, that’ll cost ya. A whole lot more, I bet. I could buy a whole lotta chickens with that kinda money.
They got all sorts of these fancy watches, for men and for women. Go look, they say. Find your Patek, they say. Like it’s hidin’ somewhere, waitin’ for you. I ain’t got time for hidin’ games. I need a watch that tells the time, that’s all.
There’s another one, the 5227, it’s got a special back, they say. You can open it up, see the insides. Like lookin’ under the hood of a car, I guess. But who needs to see the insides of a watch? Just tell me the time, that’s all I ask.
They had this big show, in Munich, a long time ago. 2013, they said. Showin’ off these watches, I reckon. People comin’ from all over to look at watches. Seems kinda silly to me, but hey, what do I know?
And these Patek people, they say they can make any kinda watch, real complicated ones. Twice in the last hundred years, they made the most complicated watch in the whole world. Imagine that! A watch so complicated, you probably can’t even tell the time on it. All them little gears and springs, just spinnin’ around.
Then there’s this other one, the 5822P. It’s got a new engine, they say. A new “movement.” Like a car engine. But it’s a watch, not a car! They call it Caliber somethin’-somethin’. Sounds important, I guess.
So, this Patek Philippe PP Calatrava 5226G-001, it’s a watch, a fancy one. Big, thin, white gold, hard to get. Costs a lot of money, I bet. More money than I’ll ever see. But will it tell you the time better than my old kitchen clock? I doubt it. A watch is a watch, no matter how much gold they put on it or how fancy the name is. That’s what I say, anyway.
But folks like what they like. And if they want to spend all that money on a Patek, well, that’s their business. Me? I’ll stick with somethin’ simple and somethin’ I can afford.
