Hey everyone, it’s your boy back again with another project. This time, I got it into my head to recreate a classic: the Patek Philippe Golden Ellipse 5738R. You know, that sleek, rose gold beauty? Yeah, that one. It’s a bit of a challenge, but hey, who doesn’t love a good project?
So, first things first, I had to get myself familiar with this watch. I spent hours just staring at pictures online. It’s got this simple, yet elegant look, you know? The case is 18k rose gold, and it’s not too big, about 39.5mm across. And that dial! It’s this deep black with a bit of a sunburst effect. Very classy.
I started sketching, trying to get the proportions right. This watch is all about the “golden ratio” which is some fancy term for 1 / 1.6181. Sounds complicated, but it’s basically what makes this watch look so pleasing to the eye.
Next, I tried modeling it out with some 3d modeling tools. Man, getting those curves just right was a pain! But I kept tweaking and adjusting until it started to resemble the real deal. Rose gold color, check. Ebony black dial, check. Even got those slim hands in there. The movement inside is Patek’s 240 calibre, a super thin automatic movement. It’s got 27 jewels, and it beats at 21,600 vph. Fancy stuff, right?
Of course, I can’t make a real, working watch movement out of my 3d model, but hey, we are going for the looks here, not a literal copy. And I gotta say, it was super satisfying seeing it all come together. It’s not perfect, but it captures the essence of the Golden Ellipse. Also I gotta say , I wanted to show off my new creation to my friends.
Here’s a breakdown of what I focused on:
- Case: 18k rose gold, polished finish. Got the size down to about 39.5mm.
- Dial: Ebony black with that cool sunburst effect.
- Hands: Simple, rose gold hands.
- Movement: Modeled after the calibre 240, just for the visual effect.
This whole project was a good reminder that even the simplest-looking things can be super complex underneath. It took a lot of time and effort, but I’m pretty happy with how it turned out. I guess this is my little homage to a watch that’s way out of my price range, at least for now. What do you guys think? Let me know in the comments! I’m really happy I made it!
